TANKED UP WITH STAINLESS STEEL

Traditionally fuel, oil and water tanks for the marine industry are made from aluminium, while mild steel is used for tanks in the manufacturing of vehicles. One company who has recognised the benefits of stainless steel in the manufacture of tanks is the appropriately titled ‘Tank Company’, part of the Oval 316 group of companies.

The Tank Company have been specialising in the production of stainless steel fuel, oil and water tanks for 25 years now, with their 25th anniversary taking place throughout October. They produce tanks for every type of industry, but in particular the marine and specialist vehicle industry, where the benefits of stainless steel tanks include a longer lifespan, less maintenance due to its non-corrosive benefits and a high resale value for the second hand parts market.

They also cite the actual production of stainless steel as a benefit in the manufacturing of their tanks. With modern steel making techniques, stainless steel can be easily cut, welded, formed, machined and fabricated as readily as traditional steels. This can be seen in the unique production methods of the Tank Company’s tanks, where all tanks are radius-edged and individually welded by skilled coded welders using TIG and synergic MIG welding, producing superior quality welds in any position.

The production methods used by the Tank Company for the specialist vehicle industry, enable them to produce tank bodies with only one horizontal seam. CNC produced tooling also ensures pressed ends and baffles are produced to the same high specification.

The Tank Company have produced over 28,000 stainless steel and aluminium tanks over the last 25 years. Each tank is individually pressure tested and certified and carries a two-year guarantee. They have recently appointed David Green as their Sales Manager and with new tools and machinery, are expanding into Europe. Last year, they provided tanks for the vessels used by the Royal Oman Police Coastguard, while most recently, they have sold specialist tanks to Ice Marine and Fairline International for their new vessels to be launched at the Southampton Boat Show, as well as 12 sets of tanks manufactured for Delta Power, to be placed in vessels for the Dutch Antilles Coastguard.

The expansion of the company comes at a time when more and more people are recognising the long-term benefits of stainless steel in all types of industry. The initial cost saved from buying a cheaper material, isn’t always justified in the lifespan of the product. The Tank Company encompasses this ideology, using stainless steel as a superlative material for their specialist tanks.
